VietSoc Kicks Opposition Into Touch

Society Vietnam UK cup is the biggest annual football tournament event of the year for all Vietnamese Societies to compete in. The tournament has been organised for 6 years with around 16-25 football teams from cities all around the UK. This year it’s taken place in Nottingham, the home of Robin Hood. The Newcastle Vietnamese Society team is proudly sponsored by BACK Consulting and has trained hard and with determination to rise to the challenge. Tuan Truong, a member of BACK Consulting, has achieved the great support from the manager (Hoang Duc Hoang) for the tournament.

VietSocAt the first day of the tournament Newcastle was drawn in one of the hottest groups facing Northampton- a young strong-minded team, a well-formed experienced team called London 1 and finally an well-managed team from Warwick. However, with the familiar weather of wet and bitter, the players of Newcastle destroyed Northampton 3-0. Tuan Truong got himself on the score sheet in this convincing win. Afterwards, with a lot of missed chances Newcastle drew the next two games and qualified to the quarter-final as top team in the group.

The sun was shining on day two and Newcastle came up against Southampton in the quarter final, a team always one of the top 8 teams in the past tournaments. Although many of the key players were struggling with injuries and the tiredness from the first long day, the team played well and won the game with one goal from the captain. Newcastle then qualified to the semi-final as the only team yet to lose a goal. Although the team had to face the host of the tournament Nottingham 2, the players managed to finish the first half one nil up. Nottingham 2 managed to level and the game looked delicately poised. The game ended with the score 2-2 as Newcastle got the second goal in the last minute. Unfortunately the team lost 2-0 in the penalty shoot-out, ending the tournament in third-place.

Although the team didn't win the tournament, the players played well and deserved the victories. They are always the champions in the heart of the supporters. Barry Kemp, Director of BACK Consulting said:

"Tuan is obviously very involved with the Vietnamese Society for Newcastle so it seemed logical that we provide some sponsorship for the team. It's good to see a community come together and be strongly inter-linked whilst being many thousands of miles away from home. Tuan and his friends are fiercely loyal to their country and its culture and long may this continue. The football team has done an excellent job in reaching the quarter finals and were unlucky to be put out by that most cruel and British of endings... the penalty shoot-out!.

"Well done to all the team and the continued success of the Vietnamese Society of Newcastle. I hope the team can make it to the BACK in the Garden annual BBQ so we can honour them for their achievements."
