Business Plan Competition Awards 2008

Another night of glitz and glamour as the annual Northumbria University Business Plan Competition Awards 2008 took place. Roger Candy and Graham Baty work tirelessly as part of the enterprise campus department of the university which strives to support student and graduate enterprises trying to find their way in the world of business.

Held at Kingston Park, the home of rugby team Newcastle Falcons, the place was sold out and every seat was taken. A great meal, top notch band and awards ceremony made the night complete. Every year the number of entrants into the competition gets bigger and the quality undoubtedly gets better. The university itself has managed to entwine more entrepreneurship based learning into its courses which can only be a good thing for both the UK and the North East economy in particular.

BACK Consulting sponsors two of the awards and our votes went to Christopher Plowman – Phoenix Casino, his plan of building a casino and Christopher Shepherd – Lecturecast, an e-learning portal. Both have great merit and were well thought and researched. Andrew Charlton was very impressed with the continually rising standards of the competition:

"We've committed to this event on an annual basis and love to get some direct involvement with the students of today. They are now being taught about how to start and run a business including all the intricacies of legislation, marketing techniques, tax and much more. I love to see students take these opportunities and really go for it!"
